How do I check if a Los Angeles address is near a Superfund site?
Short answer: Use EPA’s "Search for Superfund Sites Where You Live" page: select California to list sites proposed to, currently on, and deleted from Superfund’s National Priorities List (NPL), or open its NPL map and zoom to the address. EPA’s Cleanups in My Community map also shows sites and facilities addressed under other cleanup programs.
Three EPA tools
- State list. On EPA’s "Search for Superfund Sites Where You Live" page, select California to "display sites in that state," including sites "proposed to, currently on, and deleted from Superfund’s National Priorities List (NPL)."
- NPL map. The same page has a "Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) Where You Live Map." EPA notes the site coordinates "are derived from Hazard Ranking System documentation records," so a site’s pin is a point, not its boundary.
- Cleanups in My Community. EPA describes this map as including "Superfund sites as well as sites and facilities addressed under other programs."
Read the site’s status
EPA’s state list includes an "NPL Status" column for each site. Open the site’s EPA page for details, and note the date of anything you read there.
What Ground Report checks here, and what it doesn’t
The free score checks:
- EPA Superfund sites near the street address, with the distance in miles and the site’s NPL status as EPA records it.
It does not check:
- Conditions on your own property. Ground Report does not test soil, water or air on site.
- Every cleanup program on EPA’s Cleanups in My Community map.
